R&S Project Grants

Get Funding to Turn Your Ideas into Reality!

We want to support the incredible work that you are doing in your community.

Young people, educators, individuals, and group leaders based in the U.S. are invited to apply for a $250 or $500 Roots & Shoots Project Grant to plan, start, support, or celebrate a community-action project that helps people, animals or the environment we all share!

The application is open NOW through May 6th! See below for more information and the link to the online application.

If you are in one of the R&S Basecamp metro areas (Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Portland, OR and Tampa Bay),  reach out to your Basecamp Coordinator for additional funding opportunities. The R&S Basecamp page has contact info for R&S Basecamp coordinators.

Who can apply?

Children, teens, educators, community groups/organizations, group leaders…any Roots & Shoots member who is interested in starting (or continuing) a community-action project to positively impact people, other animals, and the environment we all share.

To apply you must:

• Reside in the United States.

• Plan a project that takes place in the United States.

• Be a registered member of Roots & Shoots.

Roots & Shoots projects thrive when young people take the lead in choosing, planning, and doing a community project.

Successful past applications have shown how young people:

• Used the R&S 4-Step Formula;

• Took the initiative to map their community; and/or

• Developed a project plan.

R&S Project Grants FAQ

  • CURRENT GRANT TIMELINE
    Application opens – March 23, 2025
    Application deadline – May 6, 2025
    Notification of award – End of May 2025
    Grant awards distributed –Early June 2025
    Grant report due – Dec 30, 2025

    **This grant award supports R&S activities that take place June-December 2025.

  • As a Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots USA grant awardee, you commit to:
    • Registering as a member of Roots & Shoots (it’s free!)
    • Spending the grant funds only on items benefiting your Roots & Shoots project.
    • Submitting your grant report by the specified due date.
    • Creating AND updating a project profile on the Roots & Shoots website.
    • Spending your grant before your award debit card expires.
    • Participating in program surveys for the continued growth of the program.

  • YES! Roots & Shoots USA has five designated Basecamps with additional supports for Roots & Shoots members and projects.

    - Portland, OR
    - Tampa Bay, FL

  • As a R&S awardee, you are asked to submit a grant report to tell us about your project’s impact. Grant recipients who do not submit a grant report risk their eligibility for future funding from Roots & Shoots USA.

  • Yes! If you are a Roots & Shoots USA grant recipient, we may reach out to you with a survey for each of your group members to fill out. This anonymous survey helps us improve our program to better support young people making a difference in their communities.
