The Problem

The International day of Peace was celebrated with St Theresa Primary School in Entebbe, Uganda. Roots and Shoots groups around the country were encouraged to celebrate peace day under the theme: the right of peoples to peace.

Our Plan

in 2014 the International Day of Peace was celebrated by R&S groups in Uganda. During the celebrations, a number of activities were carried out, these included; assembling and flying the peace dove, matching through Lugard Avenue. The match was flagged off by Dr. Panta Kasoma (Executive Director of JGI Uganda) who noted that pupils are peace ambassadors in their school and communities. He said that peace goes beyond the absence of war in the country. He talked to the students about human beings being stewards of the earth and therefore charged with the responsibility of taking care of environment and animals but not to misuse them. He highlighted the floods in Kampala as one of the manifestations of how human activities have greatly degraded the environment. The pupils of St Theresa presented a poem in which they expressed their concern about lack of respect for their rights as children. They highlighted the high number of children not going to school due to lack of school requirements even when their parents can afford to get money for other things such as alcohol, negligence by parents leading to diseases and high rate of drug use and domestic violence. They called upon the concerned stakeholders to support and fight for children rights because they are the future of this country. A tree was planted at the school as a reminder that peace is not only the absence of war but also harmony with nature.
