The Problem

The mission of the Kennedy Global Leadership and Environmental Action Magnet is to educate, engage, empower, and mobilize tomorrow’s leaders. At GLEAM, we believe that a sustainable future depends on informed and active citizens who can generate and implement solutions to global problems. Our program connects a high quality, rigorous education academic curriculum to the environmental, climate-based, and human rights challenges facing our communities locally, nationally, and globally. We will foster a culture of mindfulness and civic responsibility through service-learning projects and educational initiatives that extend beyond the classroom, so that GLEAM students will become agents of change, both in their own lives and in the lives of others. As one part of our program, we have created a school garden, the GLEAM Green Space, for our students. The hope is that the GLEAM Green Space will serve as an outdoor gathering space and educational space where GLEAM students and the students of our host school, John F. Kennedy High School, can enjoy and benefit from the literal fruits of our labor. This space is used to educate our student body about the importance of healthy foods as well as the importance of urban gardens in helping to maintain and improve our local biodiversity, specifically pollinator species.

Our Plan

Our next step is to certify our garden as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. We are working to include homes and rest spaces for native pollinators in the GLEAM Green Space.
