California Native Butterfly Gardens – Save the Monarchs

The Problem

Several years ago the HM Horticulture Club planted a Native Butterfly Garden full of Tropical Milkweed. Since that time scientists have determined that Tropical Milkweed is actually detrimental to Monarchs. We have witnessed several caterpillars dying before completing the pupation process. This year we wish to remove the existing tropical milkweed and replant with narrow leaf milkweed. Perhaps even more important we would like to expand our public education campaign to help fight the misinformation about tropical milkweed and emphasize the need to plant the correct species of milkweed for the region.

Our Plan

We will replant our Native Butterfly Garden with the correct milkweed for our region. We will educate others about the detriment of tropical milkweed for Monarchs and the need to plant the correct species of milkweed for the region.
