“By creating long and lasting friendships with my fellow students and learning more about them and their opinions, I will gain a broader perspective on many important issues.”
Grade: Sophomore in San Diego, California
History with Roots & Shoots: One year with Roots & Shoots
Yoyo is a sophomore from San Diego, California. This is her first year on the National Youth Leadership Council. Her favorite Roots & Shoots project is “Music for Peace,” through which she compiles videos of herself playing the Koto, or Japanese harp, integrated with nature videos. This project is important to Yoyo because she’s able to incorporate her love of music with a way to help society. She hopes to expand the project in the future by collaborating with other musicians who have the same vision. Yoyo is passionate about social justice, combating wildlife trafficking and animal abuse, and mental health. She has led projects to help foster animals, bring music to others, and write letters or support and love to patients in mental facilities and hospitals. Yoyo enjoys dancing and values spending time with her family, friends, and rescue pets.
