Mangrove Shade House

The Problem

The project we have in mind is a shade house, which is a green house for mangroves. As you may know, mangroves are extremely important to our local ecosystem; they provide shelter for a variety of animals, prevent coastal erosion, and are capable of filtering out pollutants from the air and water. The shade house is an approximately 25X25 foot structure that consists of a basic framework covered in an inexpensive cloth material. Inside the shade house would be several troughs to house the mangroves. Water, stored in rain barrels, would be drawn from a pump (powered by a solar panel) into the troughs to water the mangroves. Outside the shade house, we could plant any number of native species of plants to add to the aesthetic of the project. While we have a basic design for the project, we would be open to discussing other ideas you may have.

Our Plan

Indialantic STEM classes could use the shade house to observe plant growth, etc., while learning more about our local ecosystem. I feel it is important for younger students to understand more about the problems that face the Indian River Lagoon, and to also feel like they can make a difference. This project would engage your students, and afford them the opportunity to interact with high school-aged volunteers that are eager to be positive role-models.
