A professional development opportunity with the Jane Goodall Institute for New York City Educators!
The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), in collaboration with the Wallerstein Collaborative for Urban Environmental Education at New York University, is excited to bring Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots, JGI's global youth program to NYC classrooms!
Through Roots & Shoots, JGI's innovative professional development model, service-learning tools, and emphasis on hands-on, high impact service creates a transformative experience for both educators and their students.
Through the Roots & Shoots program, young people observe and map their local area to develop a deep understanding of the community they call home. From their findings, these young people identify a need for people, animals or the environment and then take action through a service-learning campaign to improve their community.
To have the greatest impact, JGI's professional development opportunities with Roots & Shoots offers in-depth support including in-person, online and financial assistance. With the involvement and contributions of past participants, JGI has refined this professional development opportunity service-learning initiative, and cannot wait to bring this new, more supportive model, to more New York educators this school year!
Testimonials from Past Educators
“It made me very proud to see the tremendous growth […] the students gained through this experience! We wouldn’t have thought to do a project like this with the kids had it not been for the Roots & Shoots program to get us started!”
“I learned a ton about how to run a club, what works, what doesn't, how to get kids to commit and keep coming back and take ownership of what they are doing. I think next year we can come back and do things bigger and better!”
“This was one of the best experiences I've ever had from the very start. The initial training was excellent and the cohort group via basecamp kept me in the loop and kept me on target. Thank you for all the work everyone did!”
