Group of the Month: SCVi Roots and Shoots

Date:
Thursday, January 31, 2013 - 1:00pm

Each month, a group with outstanding and creative projects is recognized as the Group of the Month. For January 2013, we celebrate SCVi Roots and Shoots. We caught up with the Group Leaders Brandy and Cora to learn more about what this group is doing to make positive changes happen for people, animals, and the environment!

What inspired you to start a group with Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots?

Cora was inspired to start the SCVi Roots & Shoots when she had an assignment to research a famous person who made a positive difference. While studying about Jane Goodall, she found Roots & Shoots and asked her teacher if she could include this as part of her project. We attend a project based learning IB Charter School that fully supports this kind of learning and she got started right away! She loved learning about the group and everything about it! SCVi stands for the school: Santa Clarita Valley international Charter School.

Which of your projects has been your favorite so far, and why?

A favorite project was the very first Animal Shelter Drive. Cora said that it was the beginning and a great start. While they collected a few items, the Shelter workers were so grateful- it made the SCVi R&S want to give even more!

What are your plans or goals for your next project?

SCVi R&S has planned their next project: "Pocket Change for Puppies" which will hopefully help fund the Animal Shelter vet bills. They plan to have collections and donate the money to the Animal Shelter. On their last visit, they learned that the biggest expense is the veterinary bills.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to your group?

One of the funniest SCVi R&S memories is the many attempts at origami doves with recyclable paper! They were very creative and ended up having a blast inventing all sorts of paper flying contraptions and some represented "doves". It was quite the experiment!
