    Roots & Shoots youth representatives will speak at the United Nations for the 2008 International Day of Peace Student Observance. The theme of the event is human rights. Other speakers will include UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, as well as representatives from World Vision and Amnesty International.

    Join the festivities: live music, arts and crafts, celebrity speakers and more! The local "Hot Moms Club" will host an "EcoFabulous" fashion show featuring celebrity moms and the latest in green fashion and peace accessories. There will be music by Cord with Rami Jaffee of the Foo Fighters; Leather Souls; Foshay High School Band; Danza Xochipilli; and Tumi Ansa and the Bottom Tree Band.     Roots & Shoots groups in Spain are using the Roots & Shoots Day of Peace as a kick-off to a two month peace campaign to raise funds for Roots & Shoots groups in Tanzania and the Lake Tanganyka area. For the Day of Peace they will be flying Giant Peace Doves full of smaller re-used paper doves that have wishes written on them. Find out more about Palomas de la Paz.

    Peace Day Youth Summit
    Three hundred youth will be celebrating and promoting peace. They will also be flying Giant Peace Dove Puppets.

  • Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
    Flying Doves on
    Mount Kilimanjaro
    Five youth in Tanzania will spend six days climbing Mount Kilimanjaro's Uhuru peak (19,340 feet). Once at the top, they will fly a Giant Peace Dove Puppet from the "Roof of Africa!"

    City Hall

    Starting with a moment of silence, Roots & Shoots groups in the UK embarked on a two hour parade from city hall, across the Millennium bridge, past the Tower of London, along Tower Bridge and finally returning to City Hall.
    Cheered on by thousands of Londoners, the Roots & Shoots groups also raised money to help establish a new center for abused children in Liverpool for the Red Balloon charity.

    Students will be flying a Roots & Shoots Giant Peace Dove while the choir and string accompanists perform songs of peace. Visual art students will create expressions of peace that will be displayed in the school for all to enjoy. Students will read quotes about peace followed by a moment of silence.
