Vice President, Youth Programs

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is currently seeking a full-time Vice President of Youth Programs to lead the Institute's youth initiatives.

JGI works to protect Great Apes and their habitats by combining conservation, research and education with assistance to local communities. Its youth programs are designed to build a worldwide network of young people who are taking action to care for the environment, animals and human communities.

The Vice President of Youth Programs will be responsible for the development and growth of the Institute's Roots & Shoots program. Roots & Shoots engages young people in projects in their local communities that help people, animals and the environment, and connects them with similarly engaged young people worldwide. The VP Youth Programs will also oversee the implementation of the Jane Goodall Global Youth Summit, an annual gathering of committed young people from many countries. With a U.S. staff of 20, and a budget of $2.3 million (USD), JGI's youth programs link groups in almost 100 countries and are poised to continue their rapid expansion.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Love for animals and the natural world

Roots & Shoots Volunteer, New York City Office

The Roots & Shoots volunteer will assist the New York City Outreach Coordinator with publicizing the program as well as nurturing the network of existing Roots & Shoots members. A major role of the volunteer will be to help plan an event to commemorate United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21, 2008. The volunteer will also help to coordinate other smaller events leading up to this day, most of them involving the Roots & Shoots community.

Volunteer responsibilities include:

  • Handling general program information requests by phone, mail, email, and fax.
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of the Roots & Shoots program within New York City
  • Maintaining contact with groups in the NYC tri-state area
  • Occasionally interacting with the general public and representing the program at events on an as needed basis
  • Aiding the NYC Outreach Coordinator in planning major events and outreaching opportunities

Successful candidates will possess the following:

  • Interest in helping youth make positive differences for their environment and community
  • Bachelor's or equivalent degree or be currently enrolled in a college level program

The volunteer will start immediately and must be committed to working through the end of September 2008, with the possibility of extending the volunteer term. There will be no hourly compensation or stipend. Hours will be determined by workload and may change on a weekly basis. This is a very flexible engagement. A typical week will entail about 20 hours of work. Volunteers must be able to complete most of their work from home, yet also be available to meet in person in Manhattan 1-2 times per week.

Roots & Shoots Volunteer

Location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Status: Minimum 6-month commitment. Start dates are April and October. Applications accepted on a rolling basis.

Job Description:

  • Support local R&S clubs through attending club meetings, assisting with project creation and implementation, and making educational presentations. Successful projects have included: cleaning beaches and schoolyards, bird watching, tree planting, creating school gardens, visiting orphanages and hospitals, field trips to natural areas, and campaigns to raise awareness of local environmental and social issues such as HIV/AIDS and bushmeat.
  • Represent R&S in the local community through conducting presentations, teaching workshops, exhibiting at a community event, visiting new schools who are interested in joining the program, or participating in partner organization's events.
  • Aid in the planning, preparation and implementation of annual R&S events such as International Peace Day, African Child Day, and Roots & Shoots week.
  • Develop and implement a volunteer project in collaboration with local R&S groups.
  • Assist with on-going projects such at the Yatima R&S scholarship program which sponsors 25 orphaned children to attend secondary school.
  • Assist with general office administrative tasks

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: Roots & Shoots, community development, teaching, sciences, conservation, event planning, grant writing, computers/technology, administrative support
  • The ideal volunteer will be mature, flexible, self-motivated, adapt to new environments easily, willing to work hard, culturally sensitive, have a sense of humor, and willing to do whatever tasks need to be done
  • Experience working in Africa or a developing country a plus
  • Must be 21 years of age or older

NOTE: For those with significant Africa experience, including conversational Kiswahili, opportunities in the Moshi/Arusha and Iringa Regions are available.

Program contribution:
Volunteer contributes to the Jane Goodall Institute: $2,900 (USD) for six months and $350 (USD)/month for every additional month

We are currently looking for a volunteer for a 6-month placement from the beginning of October 2007. The volunteer will be largely office based for the first four months, helping with the reviewing and editing of the new environmental education primary school curriculum, as well as other tasks. The final two months will be field based at one of our education centre, helping to deliver an environmental education programme to primary school children.

The ideal volunteer will have teaching experience, be very competent with computing (particularly formatting and editing) and must be happy to live in a remote forest location.

Intern/Volunteer, K'aslem Mandala Roots & Shoots Program

The Jane Goodall Institute with K'aslem Mandala is seeking a volunteer/intern to commit to a minimum 1-month (hopefully 3-month) post in Guatemala to help with the development of Roots & Shoots groups.

K'aslem Mandala is an Environmental Education Youth Leadership program in a unique Mayan village by one of the most beautiful and endangered lakes in the world. The positive effects of our work are spreading around the Lake. There are currently two Roots & Shoots programs and three more groups in various stages of formation. One of the groups is for girls and boys, ages of seven and 15, and the young adult group for youth between ages of 15 and 25. The position would involve engaging the Roots & Shoots group to complete projects that help the environment, animals or the human community.

K'aslem Mandala program is sponsored by a California based non-profit organization Los Cimientos Alliance-(LCA). The two Roots & Shoots groups are part of the K'aslem Mandala Environmental Education Program. (K'aslem Mandala Sacred Circle of Life)

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A knowledge and love of the natural environment
  • An interest in working with teenagers and children
  • The ability to be an Ambassador for the Jane Goodall Institute and Roots & Shoots International
  • Proficient Spanish skills (or be a fast learner)
  • The ability to be self-sufficient, but also be able to work within a team
  • Be mature, reliable and responsible
  • An understanding that Guatemala is considered to be a dangerous place


The position is located in San Lucas Toliman, Solola, Guatemala, at beautiful Lake Atitlan, near many villages of Mayan cultural interest 20 minute boat ride or 1 hour chicken bus ride from Panajachel, popular international tourist town.

The program continues year round, we are looking for volunteers who can commit a minimum one month, but we prefer a three month commitment.

This is an all volunteer organization so there is no compensation for the position, but we can offer Guest Privileges in the K'aslem Mandala Panajachel Home-Office. All of the funding goes towards K'aslem work-study stipends for Mayan youth who have no other economic resources.
